overall appearance •
Above ground in the real world Dinah has the build of a well-kept tabby queen who has led a good life. Well-fed and well-groomed, her semi-long fur has darkened in tone. Muzzle and eyes graying with age.
But her journey into Underland has rewound the clocks and she has regained the vibrant ginger hues of her semi-long coat, painted with stripes of brown and ochre that cover her from sleek head to bushy tail. Bright eyes of amber peek out from a round face, perhaps the only feature that betrays a sense of maturity no young cat should have.
And thanks to a certain ‘Drink Me’ bottle, she can take on a rather different form; a petite humanoid body, heart-shaped face and a short crop of ginger hair… Thankfully all it takes is a bit of Underland Pussywillow to change her back to her true self.
In terms of apparel there isn’t much to speak of. Her clothing consists of a mish-mosh of fabric and metals taken from her descent down the rabbit hole. She also has a silk ribbon collar and bell with her name engraved upon it. More for aesthetic purposes than practical.

'Dinah's our cat. And she's such a capital one for catching mice, you ca'n't think! And oh, I wish you could see her after the birds! Why, she'll eat a little bird as soon as look at it!'- Alice in Wonderland; Chpt 3
She’s lived a full life, as any well-bred house cat will tell you.
Dinah has known nothing but happiness in her time, from the very moment she was given to a little girl on her birthday as a tiny mewling ball of fur. A warm, comfortable home out of the rain, kind and indulging humans, a family of her own. And while she may have outlived her own kittens, she knows that there will always be the one light in her life that has kept this bag of bones and fur going…
Her dear Alice.
Ah the fun they used to have.
Playing hide and seek around the large estate and frolicking through the gardens. But best of all were the adventures they’d embark on, conjured up by the wild imagination of a young girl’s mind. With Alice, Dinah had trekked through dangerous terrains, saved many a damsel and slew countless of monsters. And when the day was through, they would retire to Alice’s room and she would captivate the tabby kitten with a treasury of stories.
All that changed however, on the girl’s seventh birthday.
Beneath the tree by a gentle stream, the duo was taking a rest when a flash of white streaked across the green. Dinah had seen many creatures during her patrol of the gardens (some that made tasty snacks), and that included rabbits. But never had she seen one clothed as humans were, and speaking as humans did. The next thing she knew, Dinah was bounding after Alice who was on the rabbit’s trail, only to lose her when she tumbled down a deep chasm at the foot of a great tree.
But even as the girl disappeared, Dinah realized that she could still feel Alice at the back of her mind, as if it were a secondary instinct that allowed her to know that her human was alright and alive. There was nothing to do but to wait by the brook until her Alice was returned to her, all the while keeping track of her mistress through the strange link.
And when Alice was finally back aboveground, Dinah patiently waited for the young girl to open her eyes, somehow knowing that that was only the beginning.
From then on, she would listen attentively and faithfully to Alice’s stories of a place called ‘Wonderland’. Staying by her side through the nights of strange dreams and nightmares, purring softly to comfort her, keep her safe.
Only Dinah knew that these were no mere figments of her fantasy, a silent witness to something no one else would believe.
The bond between cat and girl was strong, and Dinah was fully aware that the constant visions of weird and frightening creatures were taking a toll on Alice. Depriving the human of proper sleep and rest, despite Dinah’s best efforts to bring peace to her troubled mind. Some called Alice strange, others called her mad but Dinah believed that she was just lost.
Years passed swiftly, and Dinah watched Alice grow. Watched her begin to separate from herself in an attempt to ‘mature’. The death of Alice’s father only seemed to cause the girl to drift further and further away and it saddened Dinah so. After all, she was not the youthful and spritely kitten she once was, she could no longer perform the usual comical antics that once made Alice laugh. It had been an eternity since she’d seen Alice laugh.
On the day that Alice left for the party, Dinah was made to stay home as ‘no proper young lady should be seen walking around with animals like that at an event’ or so they said. The tabby queen was more than happy to await for Alice’s return, napping upon the window sill. When she suddenly felt a sharp, strong tug on the mental bond she had with the girl…
Alice had gone back down the rabbit hole, Dinah was sure of it.
This time, Dinah was adamant that she would be there to see to it that Alice returned home, safe and sound. She may be old and graying at the whiskers, but had to get her human back. So she snuck out of the house as quick as her aged limbs could take her and returned to the tree behind the brook to look for the portal that would lead her to Alice and the place that had been haunting the both of them for years.
Little did Dinah know that her quest would not be as simple as she expected, especially when there was a battle to be won with her human as the key to Underland’s freedom from the clutches of the Red Queen.
Looks like she’ll need all of her nine lives to get both her and Alice out of this one.
